WelcomeWelcome to the Iitti Music Festival 2004!
The moment I started planning the programme for this year’s Festival, I knew it would have to begin with some music by J.S. Bach. The music of Bach has been enchanting people for a whole 300 years, with its soothing mood and jubilant rhythmic pulse. From Bach it is a natural step to Mozart, and I am delighted to be able to offer listeners a live performance of his Divertimento – a work that never fails to appeal. For this I thank the Iitti Camerata, an ensemble consisting almost entirely of artists at this year’s Festival. Representing the Romantic era are Chopin, Mendelssohn and Schubert. By way of contrast, and adding piquant spice, we have some magnificent contemporary Finnish music, by Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kaija Saariaho and Aulis Sallinen. The artists this summer are again among the finest, and they will all be doing their utmost to make the concerts enjoyable. This year the Festival is also introducing a visual artist, Jegori Koski, who last held an exhibition in Finland in the 1970s. For its finale the Music Festival will be returning to Hiidenvuori Hill, for a concert where Nature features large on the programme. What could be more beautiful than to watch the sunset casting reflections on the river while listening to familiar songs performed by brilliant singers? The atmosphere will linger long in the memory.
Laura Mikkola In 2003 the Iitti Music Festival received partial funding from the EU. The corresponding funds will be used in 2004 for music courses and tourist co-ventures. ![]() |
